Famous Seremban Favourites...

Hands up if you’re from Seremban and love Seremban food!

If you’ve ever gone driving around the Aman Suria / Sunway Mas area, you may have come across the ‘Famous Seremban Favourites’ restaurant. The place is owned by Bill Khoon, who claims to have the best charsiew (barbecued pork) in town.

And guess what? You’ll HAVE to agree. His charsiew is SO good, it sells out by 3pm every single day. Bill’s got customers that come from as far as Bangi and Shah Alam just to get a couple of pieces of the succulent ‘melt-in-your-mouth’ pork. With two whole rows of charsiew strips each day, you’d think there would be some left over, but nope…you’ll just have to book WAY early to reserve, or just try your luck.

His Hakka Mee is also excellent, with moist noodles and tenderly sautéed mince. If you can’t quite make up your mind, just ask Bill for his recommendation. You can’t go wrong!

If you need further convincing, his chilli is also self-made, and packs quite a punch…just thinking of it is making me drool again…I wonder if he has plans to market “Bill’s Chilli – Kao Kao” (after Lingam’s chili sauce)…he’d make a killing out of it.

His other specialties include the deep fried sui kao…

…deep fried wantan and siew yuk (roast pork belly).

All I can tell you is, the day he starts making ‘ngau lum fun’ (beef noodles), I’ll literally be eating there every day!! (and I’d still be within budget!)

Hai Peng @ Old Klang Road…

This place was introduced to me by my boss earlier this year. Since then, I’ve been there a couple of times and I have to say they’re pretty consistent with their food. Since we went in a group, we managed to try a whole slew of dishes.

First up, the “lai liew ha” or yabbies…

The yabbies are de-shelled for you and coated in a peppery sauce. Very nice!

Veggies are of course a must to every meal. This dish was the first to arrive, and made a good ‘appetizer’ for the following dishes.

Next up was “teen kai”, or frog. I’m not a personal fan of frog meat, but this dish is pleasant enough with ginger and spring onions.

The ‘tung fun’ here is absolutely full of filling – chicken pieces, shredded carrots, prawns, beansprouts, cabbage…highly recommended.

This is one of Hai Peng’s MUST TRY dishes - Marmite chicken. Their ‘Marmite’ dishes overall are a specialty here…we also tried the Marmite crab as well, and the sauce makes a perfect complement to the crabmeat.

Of course, not forgetting the main attraction of the restaurant – the ‘Shuun Lat’ (translated: Hot and Sour) crabs. Believe me, you can NOT get enough of the unbelievably tasty sauce. You can also order Indian bread toast to mop up the sauce as well.

I’d say this was the evidence of a very satisfying meal, don’t you?

Hai Peng gives good value for money. They’ve got a good selection of dishes (another dish to try is the fried calamari with a hint of saffron) and are quite generous with the portions, so go easy on the ordering. You can always add on to your order, since the food arrives pretty fast (and piping hot). And good news for my Muslim friends, this place is pork-free as well, so do give it a try.

dr. feelgood by Benefit...

I came across this during one of my recent visits to the Benefit counter – dr. feelgood. I’ve heard some good reviews about it, and after much thought, finally decided to splurge on a tin for myself (hey, it’s hard earned money, what can I say?)

Product Description:
This is a new idea for smooth, silky, matte skin. It's dr. feelgood - our complexion miracle worker! This colorless, weightless balm goes on bare skin or glides over makeup to reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores while soaking up excess oil. Enriched with Vitamins A, C and E, dr. feelgood is just what the doctor ordered for beautiful, healthy skin!

Tips and tricks: Using the sponge provided, pat and smooth dr. feelgood on your face, giving special attention to any areas with fine lines or enlarged pores. Continue to use throughout the day for quick and flawless touch ups.

After applying makeup a couple of times with and without dr. feelgood as a base, I found that it really does make a difference to makeup application. The silicone-base acts as a ‘filler’ for skin imperfections, and coupled with the Vitamin C infusion, it gives you that little extra boost of ‘glow factor’ for the evening out. It’s also got a nice mild citrus fragrance (think of a muted Redoxon scent).

On top of that, the packaging is enough to attract any product junkie (such as yours truly) with its sleek metal tin, enclosed application sponge and vintage design. Let’s just say I’ll be keeping dr. feelgood in my beauty bag from now on!

dr. feelgood retails at RM129, and can be found at all Benefit stores in Metrojaya Midvalley, Parkson Suria KLCC, Parkson Pavilion, Robinsons Gardens and SOGO KL.

Banquet @ Bangsar Village II...

First of all, I’d like to apologize for the serious lack of posts over the last month…been busy with quite a few things, most recent of all being the Rose Rose I Love You musical, which saw me stuck in Genting for a good two weeks. But rest assured, I’m back with plenty of reviews and products to share.

Now that’s over and done with…on with the review!

* Photo from NST Online

While at Bangsar Village II recently, some friends decided to eat at the relatively new Banquet eatery on the first floor. As it was owned by the same people who ran Café Café along Jalan Maharajalela, I was expecting a pretty good experience, but ended up a bit disappointed.

First off, let me warn you that the service here is EXCEEDINGLY slow…imagine waiting 15 minutes for a glass of water! Better yet, we ordered two glasses of water (one warm, one cold)…after 15 minutes, the waiter approached us from the back with just one glass of warm water, and proceeded to the front of the restaurant to pour the cold water and bring it back to the table. What the…??

Service aside, the menu looked decent enough, albeit on the high side of pricing – one of the drawbacks of paying for the ‘ambience’.

First up, the garlic bread. I’m sorry, but two hunks of bread plonked on a platter that’s way too big for it is NOT appetizing. For RM6 and a 20 minute wait, I expected a lot better. Taste wasn’t too bad though.

Next up was the Vermicelli in clear Tom Yam Soup. (RM18) The soup was alright, although a tad too sour for my palate. The amount of vegetables and meat included is fair, and the prawns were admittedly quite fresh, but if you’re not fond of onions, I’d suggest you give this one a miss – there are HUGE bulbs of them floating in the soup!

By all estimations, the Nasi Lemak (RM18) fell far short of the mark. First comment was ‘only one piece of chicken?’, followed by the rather bland taste of the curry. Not recommended at ALL.

Last but not least was the Grilled Butter Fish (RM25), which came with a wholegrain mustard sauce and sautéed beans. Can’t find too much fault with the sauce as it was definitely a generous amount, and the fish was just right.

On the whole, the food standard hovers around the mediocre to average level, but for the prices they’re charging, it’s literally daylight robbery to eat there. Only recommended if there’s nowhere else better to eat (and ONLY if the DeliCious outlet downstairs ever decides to close…as if!)
