Clinique City Block Sheer Oil-Free Daily Face Protector...
When Kahani wrote about Clinique’s Derma White Brightening City Block SPF40++, I was reminded that I hadn’t reviewed the tube of Clinique City Block Sheer Oil-Free Daily Face Protector I have. I’ll have to admit, this sunblock didn’t invoke a brilliant reaction, nor did it provoke a particularly unsatisfactory one...left me feeling rather “meh”, actually.

Description:
Clinique City Block Sheer Oil-Free Daily Face Protector with SPF 25 offers sheer, high-level broad-spectrum UVA/UVB daily sun protection. The lightweight formula helps wick away perspiration and absorb aexcess oil so makeup looks fresher, longer. Antioxidant-enriched. Wear alone, or as an invisible under-makeup primer. Appropriate for eye area and sensitive skin. Allergy tested, 100% fragrance free and does not contain chemical sunscreens.

The Verdict:
Similar to the Derma White City Block, City Block Sheer is tinted to avoid the pasty white colour that sometimes happens when sunblock isn’t worked properly into skin. As far as its claim as an under-makeup primer, it did help to even out my skintone a tiny bit, but I wouldn’t go as far as to wear it on its own.
From a formula perspective, I didn’t quite like the texture – it was slightly thicker than an ordinary primer, but more liquidy than my usual sunblock...I didn’t know quite what to make of it. One key thing to note is not to confuse oil-free with oil-control, since the formula WAS oil-free, but didn’t do a thing for my oily skin otherwise.
What is rather similar to Kahani’s experience with the Derma White City Block is that it DOES cause minor breakouts – I had tiny whiteheads along my forehead within two weeks of using this daily, and before you ask, yes, this was the culprit since after I stopped using it, the breakout went away completely.
When writing this review, I took it out again for a roadtest and wouldn’t you know, the breakout came back! Still a small one, but nevertheless enough to get me worried since it usually takes ages for my skin to clear up once I get breakouts – a good reminder of why I stopped using it in the first place.
In the end, I reckon this is good for people with normal skin rather than oily skin despite its oil-free formula. Also, since it’s rather pricey, I’d strongly advise that you try it out before buying an entire tube. :)

I used this for years before trying other brands. I found this to be okay. Not fantastic, could definitely control oil better, but just okay.
tine: knowing your history with clinique, i'm not surprised.. :) it's decent enough, but being average just doesn't cut it sometimes..
I've actually had a really good time of the Clinique City Block actually. I'm also prone to breakouts, with some cystic which leaves dark spots on my skin for prolonged periods of times.
However, as soon as I started using this, my skin actually improved overall as well as keeping my combination skin in check for long days (12hrs usually). I never wear foundation anymore, just a spot of concealer over the dark spots which I mentioned before, or when I get my time of the month (nothing can prevent that unfortunately.)
Different things make people break out though, and mineral makeup always gave me a really bad reaction 2-3 days later, although alot of people swear by it. I hope you find your HG in sunscreen though.
annie: thanks for your feedback, it's good to hear that it worked for you - it may not have worked for me, but it really depends on each skin type. I think I recently found my HG in sunscreen though...fingers crossed! :D
That's great. See how it goes in the long run. I still remember thinking I have found my HG whatever when I first try something new out but have been let down in the long run when I really put a product through its paces. T.T Trying out new things is so fun though.
Best of luck then!
